Gem Cave began as a well hole that didn’t hit water. The cave is now one of the longest in the Black Hills and strong airflow indicates that much more will be found.

Cavers must travel for several hours through very tight passages to reach the current end of exploration.

Large passages and incredible formations are found at the end of Gem Cave, and many unexplored passages remain!
